3 December 2015
Embassy of Japan in Palau

On 2 December, at the Ambassador’s Residence of the Embassy of Japan, Chief Obak’ldelolk Isao Peter Singeo was presented with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, in recognition of his dedication and services to the expanding Japan-Palau relations.

His Majesty the Emperor of Japan has conferred the 2015 Autumn Imperial Decorations upon 89 foreign nationals who have been dedicated to fostering ties between Japan and their own countries in a range of fields. Chief Obak’ldelolk Singeo has been awarded for the critical role he has played in supporting Japan’s search for the Japanese World War II missing and those who wish to visit Peleliu to remember their families and comrades.

At the presentation ceremony, Ambassador Kazuhiro Tajiri presented Chief Obak’ldelolk Singeo with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, and the Patent of Decoration to which the Seal of State was affixed at the Imperial Palace. Among the distinguished guests were his spouse Mrs. Yohana Singeo, and his sister and the Matriarch of Peleliu Balang Dirrulang Wong. Also in attendance were Director Gustav Aitaro from the Ministry of State of Palau, and representatives from the Japanese mission for recovery efforts organised by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Tajiri expressed his deepest gratitude to Chief Obak’ldelolk Singeo for being so supportive of Japan’s efforts to account for the missing Japanese and having established caring relationships with those who honour the memory of their loved ones. Ambassador Tajiri said that he was delighted to see Chief Obak Singeo recognised for all the hard work he had done.

In his acceptance speech, Chief Obak’ldelolk Singeo extended his heartfelt thanks to His Majesty the Emperor of Japan for this award; acknowledged that he had followed in his parents’ footsteps and received the award on behalf of his family involved with Japan’s recovery activities; and wished to be as helpful as possible for all those committed to the search for the unaccounted-for and the memory of their loved ones.

This award has been made in the year that marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. It is fitting recognition for the Japan-Palau friendship forged through cooperation in recovery and commemoration efforts for those who lost their lives in war.
